Sunrise, Queenstown NZ

Sunrise and sunset are more than bookends for each day: they are metaphors for broader passages of time, even an entire life. And so, too, they seem like good metaphors for a year in its final days.

There is something hopeful about sunrises: the pushing back of the darkness, the promise of some sort of day ahead. Today: early morning in New Zealand.
