Gila Woodpecker, Gilbert AZ

The gila woodpecker has a restricted range, but likes to hang out in saguaro desert, which is how I came to see this adult male with the twinkle in his eye. They aren’t usually so obliging as to land close to me, but the Gilbert Water Ranch has some short-ish cacti at the entrance, making for easier viewing and photographing than a woodpecker on the wrong side of a saguaro 100 yards from the path. I’m just sayin’.

Gila woodpecker peeks out from beind a tree.

Peekaboo, I see you.
