Tooth and Tail

Scotty, the world’s largest T. rex, was discovered in Sask. 35 years ago today.
– Headline from CTV News article

Isabel, the world’s scattered-est blogger, was sighted in Ont. today.
– No headline, ever.

No, my daily trials and achievements don’t often rate a headline, but they’re my life, so there’s that. As we slog our way through the moving-preparation work and hug our way through the Farewell Tour, there has not been much time for blogging. Or, for that matter, for field trips to discover “the base of a tooth and a piece of a vertebra from the tail”, later determined to be from a T. rex.

It took them 10 years to dig out the rest of the skeleton after that initial find. Talk about your slogging. It took another 10 years to clean up the bones so they could make a cast for display, the actual bones being too heavy, one of several things I learned from this article.

There must be several metaphors possible at this point, but the one that seems apt this morning is that tiny things that are easy to overlook can lead to great discoveries. The high-school principal who joined the expotition and who found “the base of a tooth and a piece of a vertebra from the tail” might just as easily have passed them by. Maybe more easily, no? I’ve been in the badlands of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Dakotas: They’re big. Vast, even. And yet buddy found “the base of a tooth and a piece of a vertebra from the tail” in that vastness. Amazing.

And wonderful to think what finds await us as we wander through our own lands, bad and good.

As you wander through your moving experience(s) (“Moving” having many definitions…) may you find only positive ones and new positive adventures.

Farewell Tour collecting hugs is very positive – we all need hugs!! And you are collecting hugs from people that have been positive in your (and their) lives.

  2. Bon Voyage, Isabel! And happy landings. It’s a pretty good time of year to be doing this so the photos as you document the journey will be fun and lovely.

Laurna – Indeed, we should miss the snow that otherwise can bedevil our route west. Onward!

How about finding a fossil in a playground? https://newsroom.calgary.ca/young-calgarian-discovers-rare-fossil-at-local-playground I wonder what all the people who handled the seemingly ordinary stone to make the playground felt about missing what was in plain site?

I hope that very human failing does not impinge on your move. I often think about your mammoth task (pun intended) and wish you fortitude.

    • Isabel Gibson says:

Judith – A playground? Even better! She likely wasn’t on a fossil-hunting trip. Thanks for the good wishes. Off we go.

    Isabel
All those boxes, boxes, boxes, filled with all those countless treasures. There’s the set of dishes that Aunt Maude gave us as a wedding gift—would leave it behind but if Aunt Maude visited—and the laundry hamper that’s pretty well worn out…but it still has some life in it so…well, we’ll get rid of it sometime in our new location. Been there, done that; 16 times!

Tom – Yeah, that’s a lot of moves. And we do seem to have a lot of stuff, even though we’ve been divesting for 3 years.

There’s also the re-discovery of things that you must have known you had because you put them in that file, and then seeing them again as if for the first time. I found some pictures we had taken of the neighbour’s son, when he was a precocious ten-year-old. He had come over to fix my computer (he’s now 25) and seemed delighted, even thrilled, to have those old pictures of himself.

I’m not moving, for a while, at least. But I am trying to clear away some “stuff” that has just accumulated for 30 years. It’s amazing what you can find!

    • Isabel Gibson says:

Jim T – 🙂 Yes, there are some unexpected bits, for sure. Some of those discoveries are fun. Some are surprising as in, “Why did I keep this?” In the latter situation, at least the next step is clear.

  6. John Whitman says:

Isabel – who knew going through all your own “stuff” collected over the years could turn up such treasures that now must be retained until the next purge —– and maybe even after that.

Safe travels to you and the Big Guy.
