Salt Spring Vistas – Part 4

St. Mary’s Lake was a cooperative photographic subject, staying in one spot and offering just enough breeze to keep the reflections interesting.

2-photo collage of reflections in St. Mary's LakeThe many species of dragonflies near the lake were less cooperative. They had a regrettable tendency to flit tirelessly about until alighting too far away and up-sun at that. Now that I can actually see this guy without squinting, it’s clear that his wings are ready for a trade-in. Continue reading

A Labour of Love?

I dunno. It seems sort of arbitrary to me.

We wear ugly sweaters and kitchy jewellery at Christmas.

Toiletry Faces

Don’t cringe: This won’t be icky.

After seeing no inadvertent faces for more than a month, I saw two in Winnipeg as I flashed past in a car. In the rain. In the heavy rain. No, we weren’t going back. And if we had,I wouldn’t have gotten out the car.

Then I was inadvertently working too hard on a contract, and my subconscious offered me these.

The facial tissue one is the odder of the two, I think: It passed the face filter because it reminded me of a photo from last year, which had reminded me of an elephant’s face. The toiletry-bag face seems more obvious, albeit sort of duckian. A cheery face, anyway, the morning after a late-night plane trip.

Salt Spring Vistas – Part 3

Trees. Leaves. Forests that you can just barely see for the trees, and car hoods that look like forests. Yes, there’s something for most folks on Salt Spring.

SNC-Lavalin: The Gift that Keeps on Giving

The Ethics Commissioner released his report on the Prime Minister’s actions with respect to the SNC-Lavalin affaire while I was on the Left Coast, but you can read it all here. Or you can read all about it here, or here, for that matter, or here.

So buddy is now two for two: judged to have breached the Conflict of Interest Act on this matter and on the Aga Khan visit. Actually, that’s not true: This is his third breach. Continue reading

Salt Spring Vistas – Part 2

A bakery atop a hill with a view of the ocean seemed like an obvious opportunity for the landscape shot: the far vista.

Maybe it was me, but those results were sort of meh.

But the nearer vista: the itty-bitty moths on the lupins? Priceless.

Ah, Rugelach – Redux

Good news from the rugelach wars: Winnipeg has a substantial Jewish population and at least one bakery that offers rugelach.

If you find yourself in Winnipeg and in need of rugelach, give the good folks at Gunn’s Bakery (Est’d. 1937) a call. If you get there early enough, you can even buy cinnamon buns sans raisins.

Salt Spring Vistas – Part 1

As a location for a family reunion, Salt Spring Island isn’t the most central. On the other hand, it’s one of the more scenic ones. Ocean. Lakes. Trees. Gardens. Boats. Campsites. Maple leaves. Sunsets.

Bad Choices; Good Outcomes

Oh, I didn’t know it was a telephone number.

This from a teenager with whom we were playing a brain skills game. (Yes, it was a “bad choices” day for us.) My challenge had been to look at a string of 10 digits (7392541098) for 15 seconds and then repeat them: Not immediately, oh no, that would be too easy. I was to repeat them when my next turn came up, several minutes later. Continue reading
